STORAGE OF CLOTHES - TIP #3

Who has enough closet space for all of their clothes?  We could all probably use more space when it comes to clothes!  Renting a small storage unit could be an easy way to solve the "closet dilemma".  We all have clothes that are appropriate for different seasons.  storage of clothesIt could be summer time and the "down jacket" would probably be low on the "wearing" list.  Or it could be the middle of winter and would we really need our shorts?  Why not rent a small storage space and use it for the clothes you won't be wearing for the season?  Think of the room you would have in your closets!

However, before you begin packing up the clothes....think about these tips:

  • Use non-rusting hangars if you are hanging garments.  Leave plenty of room between the garments.  Wardrobe boxes are specifically  built to accommodate hanging garments.
  • Rolling garment carts (like the ones that the bell hops use) can be used in combination with garment bags to hang clothing while in storage.
  • White muslin garment covers and/or sheets of acid-free white tissue paper can be used to separate garments and line boxes or bins.
  • With long term storage of clothes, one can use chemical desiccant (such as the inedible packets found in food or prescription items) can be used to absorb moisture and prevent mold growth.
  • When stacking folded garments, remember to:
1. Fold the garment using acid free white tissue paper (this prevents wrinkles)
2. Place the heaviest garments at the bottom of the pile
3, Fold and stack the garments loosely
  • Cedar blocks, mothballs, etc. are important to use with the storage of clothes.  Please remember to avoid using mothballs anywhere near where children are playing.
  • Avoid storing clothing in dresser drawers or trunks that are lined with wallpaper or adhesive liner paper as the glue can attract pests.  Glued boxes can present the same problem.
  • Starch or fabric finish should not be used prior to the garment being stored.
